Nigerian medical lecturers to begin three-day warning strike

The Nigerian Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA) has announced a total and comprehensive three-day warning strike scheduled to begin on Tuesday, September 1, 2026. The industrial action will affect medical schools across Nigeria.

Acting National Secretary-General Prof. Aniekan Peter stated that the strike is a response to the Federal Government’s failure to address critical grievances. Key issues include the failure to conclude negotiations regarding conditions of service and the lack of formal documentation for lecturer payments under the CONMESS salary structure.

NAMDA also cited the non-payment of several allowances, specifically the Medical and Clinical Academic Training Allowance (MCATA), the Earned Academic Allowance (EAA), and excess workload allowances. The association expressed concern that the government is attempting to mass-produce medical doctors without addressing the welfare of the lecturers responsible for training them, a situation exacerbated by the ‘Japa syndrome’ driving professionals out of the country.
