Nigerian military personnel receive approved salary increases

Personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces have begun receiving salary increases approved by President Bola Tinubu in August. The adjustments, which took effect on September 1, 2026, vary by rank, ranging from 30% to 80%.

Junior personnel, specifically those from the rank of Private to Staff Sergeant, are receiving an 80% increase. For example, a Private previously earning approximately ₦103,000 is now receiving about ₦190,000. Officers from the rank of Colonel down to Warrant Officer are set to receive a 50% adjustment, while officers above the rank of Colonel will receive a 30% increase.

Approximately 250,000 military personnel are expected to benefit from this revised package. According to presidential aide Bayo Onanuga, the move is expected to raise the annual military salary bill from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion. Officials stated that the pay rise is intended to boost the morale of frontline troops engaged in operations against insecurity across the country.
