Mary Habila’s Body Remains in Police Custody as Family Seeks Release and Autopsy Rejection in Nigeria
Mary Habila, a 26‑year‑old nurse employed by the Federal University of Health Sciences and later as a civil servant in Minister of Works David Umahi’s office, died on 27 June 2026 at the minister’s residence in Uburu, Ebonyi State. Her family, represented by lawyer Kaile Yusuf, filed a petition with Inspector‑General of Police Olatunji Disu demanding the immediate release of her remains for burial, stating that all police requirements had been met. The family also rejected calls for a post‑mortem, citing cultural and traditional reasons.
Minister Umahi has denied any foul play, describing Habila as “like a daughter” and saying he paid ₦2.2 million for her medical treatment in Turkey. He recounted that she spoke to her boyfriend shortly before death, complaining of a nosebleed, and was later found dead with a tap running. The Ebonyi State Police Command announced plans to engage a pathologist for an autopsy despite the family’s objections. Various organisations, including Ohanaeze Ndigbo and the Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy, have issued statements calling for a thorough investigation while urging restraint.
