Nigerian equities market faces volatility amid profit-taking

The Nigerian equities market has experienced significant volatility, characterized by a massive expansion in market capitalization followed by recent downturns driven by profit-taking. In the first nine months of 2026, the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) market capitalization grew from N99.38 trillion at the end of 2025 to approximately N163 trillion, yielding a year-to-date return of over 61 percent.

However, recent trading sessions have seen the market reverse these gains. The NGX All-Share Index recently declined by approximately 0.29 percent, with market capitalization shedding between N425 billion and N469 billion in single sessions. This downward pressure was largely attributed to selling in the banking, insurance, and industrial sectors. Notable decliners included Sovereign Trust Insurance, Unilever Nigeria, and Neimeth International Pharmaceuticals.

Despite the bearish turns, trading activity has remained robust. Some sessions reported significant jumps in trading volume and turnover, indicating substantial capital movement even during index declines. While profit-taking has clouded the near-term outlook, analysts note that sustained domestic participation and improved corporate earnings expectations continue to influence the market's long-term trajectory.
