Nigerian officials and media leaders call for journalistic integrity

In Ogun State, Police Commissioner Bode Ojajuni has urged media practitioners to return to the core tenets of journalism, emphasizing accuracy, objective reporting, and developmental news. Speaking during a visit from the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ojajuni warned that the rapid spread of unverified information on digital platforms can undermine security efforts and inflame societal tensions. He described journalists as essential partners in maintaining peace and combating crime.

Separately, Kabiru Yusuf, Chairman of Media Trust Group, emphasized the necessity of fairness, accountability, and independence in reporting. During the unveiling of the company’s converged newsroom, Yusuf noted that maintaining professional standards is challenging in environments where attempts to influence coverage are widespread. He highlighted the importance of providing a right-of-reply to ensure balanced reporting and acknowledged the responsibility of media institutions to correct inaccuracies and apologize when mistakes occur.
