Iyabo Obasanjo Returns to PDP, Secures Ogun Central Senate Ticket

Former senator Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo rejoined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State in June 2026, after leaving the All Progressives Congress (APC) earlier that year. At a ceremony in Abeokuta, PDP leaders presented her with the party’s Ogun Central senatorial district ticket for the 2027 general elections and welcomed her with the party flag. Obasanjo pledged loyalty to the PDP’s constitution and manifesto, promising to prioritize the welfare of the people. She also endorsed PDP governorship candidate Oladipupo Adebutu, expressing confidence that the party will win the 2027 governorship race. The move follows her criticism of the APC’s internal consensus process that denied her the party’s governorship ticket. Obasanjo previously served as Ogun Central senator from 2007 to 2011 on the PDP platform.
