Nigeria 2027: Tinubu's re-election bid gains northern support amid opposition maneuvering
As Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections, political maneuvering is intensifying across the country. Vice President Kashim Shettima has inaugurated the Arewa for Asiwaju (A4A) campaign structure in Abuja, signaling strong northern support for President Bola Tinubu's re-election. However, Shettima cautioned that this support is not a 'blank cheque' and emphasized that the administration must maintain accountability and deliver measurable results to earn continued trust.
Internal dynamics within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are also a focal point. Shettima expressed that internal party divisions concern him more than the opposition, urging members to support all party candidates, including those for governorship and legislative seats. Meanwhile, the appointment of prominent opposition figures like Nyesom Wike, Chukwuma Soludo, and Ademola Adeleke to Tinubu's campaign council has caused friction among APC loyalists and raised questions about political allegiances within opposition parties.
On the opposition front, efforts to form a united front are underway. Salihu Lukman of the G100 Coalition indicated that opposition parties may unveil a single consensus candidate shortly before the 2027 polls. However, internal disputes persist, such as a faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) led by Nafiu Bala Gombe, which has warned Atiku Abubakar against claiming the party's presidential ticket. Additionally, the Peter Obi Media Office has condemned Vice President Shettima for disparaging Peter Obi, calling his remarks an affront to political decency.
