Nigerian Ports Authority expands non-oil export channels

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) is implementing measures to reduce logistics bottlenecks and expand non-oil export channels to boost foreign exchange earnings. During the 21st Abuja International Trade Fair, NPA Managing Director Abubakar Dantsoho announced that the authority is strengthening port infrastructure and extending maritime logistics into the country's hinterland.

A key component of this strategy involves the management of Inland Dry Ports (IDPs), following recent Federal Government approval to transfer their development and management functions to the NPA. This move aims to bring port services closer to producers in northern and central Nigeria, allowing exporters to complete customs documentation and port clearance locally rather than transporting raw commodities to coastal ports.

Additionally, the NPA is operationalizing dedicated Export Processing Terminals (EPTs). These serve as one-stop centers for sorting, packaging, quality certification, and documentation. These interventions are intended to support the growth of agricultural commodities—such as cocoa, sesame seeds, cashew nuts, and hibiscus—as well as solid minerals, helping Nigerian businesses integrate more effectively into global value chains.
