Nigerian Ports Authority implements measures to ease export bottlenecks
The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has introduced new measures to reduce bottlenecks affecting non-oil exports. The initiative aims to improve cargo processing, expand export channels, and increase foreign exchange generation by addressing operational delays that impact the competitiveness of Nigeria’s agriculture, manufacturing, and solid mineral sectors.
In conjunction with these efforts, stakeholders at the Lekki Port corridor are implementing stricter truck movement controls to alleviate road congestion. Measures include directing trucks to use a single lane to maintain access for other road users and enforcing the use of an electronic call-up system.
To further streamline operations, the Lekki Free Port Terminal has introduced a ‘one-container, one-booking’ system and is utilizing radio-frequency identification (RFID) to improve access control and reduce truck turnaround times. Officials have emphasized the need for truckers to adhere to standard operating procedures and utilize designated parks to ensure efficient movement through the corridor.
