Nigerian Ports Authority reports growth in cargo and vessel traffic

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) reported significant growth across several key performance indicators for the second quarter of 2026. According to the NPA Operational Performance Report, cargo throughput rose by 12.3%, increasing from 31,825,592 metric tonnes in Q2 2025 to 35,740,362 metric tonnes in Q2 2026.

Analysis of trade types shows that inward cargo accounted for 56.8% of total volume, while outward cargo represented 41.9%. Notably, outward cargo saw a 22% increase, which the NPA suggests demonstrates improved export performance. Transshipment cargo contributed approximately 1.4% of the total throughput.

Vessel activity also saw upward trends. The number of completed ocean-going vessels increased by 14.4%, rising from 1,050 to 1,201. Additionally, the Gross Registered Tonnage (GRT) of these vessels grew by 22.2%, reaching 49.95 million tonnes. NPA Managing Director Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho stated that the increase in cargo volumes and ship calls underscores the resilience of the nation’s seaports in facilitating competitive trade.
