Nigerian Railway Corporation foils vandalism attempt in Osun

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) recently prevented an attempt to vandalize railway track materials at a siding serving the Dangote Steel Rolling Mills in Osogbo, Osun State. During the intervention, security personnel recovered nine oxygen gas cylinders that were allegedly being used for the illegal operation. The suspects fled the scene upon sighting the security operatives.

NRC Managing Director Kayode Opeifa highlighted the severe economic and human costs associated with rail vandalism. He noted that replacing rail tracks following vandalism-induced accidents can cost the country approximately N300 million per incident, in addition to the loss of human lives and operational disruptions. Opeifa emphasized that theft of electric cables and rail assets often leads to derailments and has become a recurring issue for criminal elements.
