Nigerian religious leaders issue guidance for 2027 elections

Religious leaders in Nigeria are issuing guidance to congregants ahead of the 2027 general elections, focusing on civic responsibility and the role of clergy in politics.

Pastor Peter Rock Sadiq, Chairman of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) Niger State Chapter, has called on Christians to participate actively in the electoral process and collect their Permanent Voter Cards. He urged voters to select leaders based on integrity, competence, and character rather than selling votes for money or food. The PFN plans to present a ‘Citizens’ Governance Charter’ to political actors, addressing issues such as security, education, healthcare, and accountability.

Separately, Bishop Josiah Idowu-Fearon has cautioned religious leaders against endorsing specific political candidates. Speaking in Kaduna, the Anglican bishop argued that such endorsements could undermine the moral authority of clergy. Instead, he suggested that leaders should focus on educating followers to assess candidates' policies and records, encouraging independent decision-making at the polls. He emphasized that Nigeria requires leaders who practice the values of their faith regardless of religious identity.
