Nigerian security forces debunk viral Sokoto mass killing claims
The Nigerian Army and the Sokoto State Police Command have debunked viral social media claims alleging a mass casualty attack in Sokoto State. A Facebook page, Hausaland Magazine, posted on October 5, 2026, claiming that armed men had attacked a community called ‘Garin Gobir Gindin,’ resulting in the deaths of over 100 civilians, 10 soldiers, and one Mobile Police officer.
Security authorities confirmed that no such incident occurred and noted that there is no record of a community by the name of ‘Garin Gobir Gindin’ in the state. Investigations also highlighted a date discrepancy in the original post. While the post circulated inflammatory rhetoric regarding ethnic groups, verified security reports across the North-West found no evidence of a mass-casualty event matching the description.
