ISWAP leader Abdussamad Ohida killed in Ondo State security operation

A joint security operation involving the Nigerian Army, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Western Nigeria Security Network (Amotekun) has killed a senior leader of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in Ondo State.

The eliminated commander, identified as Abdussamad Ohida (also known as Anwar), was killed during an intelligence-led assault on a forest hideout near Owo. Security sources indicate that Ohida had assumed a leadership role in ISWAP's activities across North-Central and southern Nigeria following the 2023 arrest of his predecessor, Abu Ikrimah (also known as Abu Uwais).

Intelligence gathered by the DSS, which was reportedly corroborated by partners in the United Kingdom, suggests that Ohida was planning large-scale terrorist attacks against civilians during the upcoming Yuletide festive period. The intelligence also indicated a long-term objective to disrupt the 2027 general elections. Ohida has been linked to several previous attacks, including the December 2025 raid on the Ipele Divisional Police Station in Owo.
