Nigerian Senate disputes claims of 25% income tax hike

The Nigerian Senate has rejected claims made by Senator Ireti Kingibe that citizens would face a 25% personal income tax if the All Progressives Congress (APC) retains power in the 2027 elections. Senator Yemi Adaramodu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, described the claims as misleading and accused Kingibe of attempting to rewrite legislation for political gain.

Adaramodu clarified that the relevant tax law was passed by the National Assembly and signed by President Bola Tinubu nearly a year ago, making it a public document. He stated that any senator dissatisfied with the law should formally raise a motion or submit a petition rather than making unsubstantiated claims.

Separately, the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) announced that under the 2025 tax reforms, individuals earning N800,000 or less annually are exempt from personal income tax. This includes those earning the national minimum wage of N70,000 monthly or less, a measure intended to protect low-income earners and promote fairness within the tax system.
