Nigerian Senate postpones security summit after fatal NAF aircraft crash

The Nigerian Senate has indefinitely postponed its two-day National Security Summit, originally scheduled for October 12 and 13, 2026. The decision follows a fatal crash of a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) ATR-42 aircraft in the Igbokoda area of Ondo State.

The crash, which occurred during a routine flight, resulted in the deaths of 25 officers and seven crew members. In response to the tragedy, President Bola Tinubu declared three days of national mourning and ordered that the national flag be flown at half-mast across the country. The President has also directed a thorough investigation into the cause of the accident.

Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele announced that while preparations for the summit were complete, the postponement is necessary to honor the victims and respect the period of national mourning. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has also extended its condolences to the NAF and the families of the deceased.
