Nigerian states enforce planning laws, seal illegal structures

The Lagos State Government sealed more than 20 properties in the Ikeja area after they were found in breach of the Lagos State Physical Planning Law. The operation, led by the Permanent Secretary of Physical Planning, Tpl. Olayinka Wasiu, and the General Manager of the Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority (LASPPPA), targeted undeveloped plots, unfinished buildings and unauthorised extensions that had previously received contravention notices.

In Oyo State, the Signage and Advertisement Agency (OYSAA) sealed over 18 billboard structures that were operating without the required permits or payments. The agency cited repeated notices and opportunities to regularise the billboards before enforcement. Both actions were presented as measures to improve public safety, ensure compliance with planning and signage regulations, and prevent hazards such as building collapses or unsafe advertising displays.
