Nigerian states increase funding for education and development

Several Nigerian state governments have announced significant budgetary allocations toward education and development projects.

In Borno State, Governor Babagana Zulum reported that the administration has invested N15.29 billion in scholarship programmes since 2023. Of this, N8.61 billion was dedicated to overseas studies in countries including China, India, Egypt, and Malaysia, while N3.83 billion supported local scholarships. The governor also approved N2.65 billion to meet 2026 foreign scholarship obligations for 158 students.

Jigawa State has approved N3.4 billion for bursaries, school infrastructure, and road development. This includes N892 million to support 193 indigenes studying medical sciences at Near East University in Cyprus, covering tuition and living expenses for the 2026/2027 session. Additionally, N1.05 billion was allocated for the 2026 external examination registration fees for over 40,000 candidates.

In Sokoto State, Governor Ahmed Aliyu stated that increased federal funding under President Bola Tinubu has enabled the state to execute development projects and provide social palliatives, such as subsidized food sales for rural residents and civil servants.
