Nigerian states launch agricultural modernization and climate-smart initiatives

Nigerian state governments in Cross River and Oyo are implementing new initiatives to modernize agriculture and enhance food security.

The Cross River State Government is launching an economic transformation programme focused on transitioning smallholder farmers from subsistence to commercial farming. The initiative includes the development of cluster farms supported by revolving loans, as well as the provision of tractors and other machinery. This programme is part of a broader Public-Private Partnership investment package estimated at ₦70 billion and US$1.075 billion, with agriculture serving as a primary component.

In Oyo State, the government has trained 880 farmers and extension officers in Climate-Smart Agriculture. This training, conducted under the 2025 Business Enabling Reform Action Plan, aims to increase productivity and resilience against climate change and soil degradation. The program emphasizes the use of modern technologies, such as satellite monitoring, drones, and automated irrigation, to optimize resource use and reduce post-harvest losses.
