Nigerian states Ogun and Nasarawa release funds for retiree pensions
Nigerian state governments in Ogun and Nasarawa have announced significant fund releases to address pension arrears and retirement benefits for former workers.
The Ogun State Government has released N6.75 billion to cover gratuity and additional pension benefits (APB). According to Head of Service Olanrewaju Saka, N2.751 billion is designated for gratuity payments to 432 beneficiaries, while N4 billion is allocated for additional pension benefits. The APB is intended to bridge the gap between the old Defined Benefit Scheme and the current Contributory Pension Scheme to ensure retirees do not face lower benefits.
In Nasarawa State, Governor Abdullahi Sule has approved N2 billion for the payment of pension arrears and other entitlements. Senior Special Assistant Peter Ahemba stated that while previous payments covered retirees up to approximately 2012, this new allocation aims to cover obligations from 2013 to the present. The state is currently working with the Nasarawa State Pension Board to finalize disbursement modalities.
