Nigerian stock market loses over N1 trillion in market value
On July 30‑31 2026 the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) saw its All‑Share Index fall about 0.66 % to 245,362 points and market capitalisation drop by roughly N1 trillion, landing near N158.34 trillion. The year‑to‑date return slipped to about 57.6 % and market breadth turned negative, with around 44‑45 stocks losing against 17‑18 gainers.
Banking shares led the sell‑off, notably Zenith Bank, Access Holdings, FirstHoldco and other major banks, while Tripple Gee & Company recorded the steepest decline of about 10 % to N2.88 per share. In contrast, Legend Internet posted the top gain of 8.64 % to N4.40 per share. Trading activity surged, with investors exchanging roughly 2.1 billion shares – a 177 % increase – and total turnover rising to about N230.83 billion.
The next trading day the market continued a modest decline, with the index slipping another 0.03 % to 245,283 points and market capitalisation falling a further N13 billion to N158.326 trillion. Profit‑taking persisted across sectors; gains were led by Eterna, AVA Capital and Consolidated Hallmark Holdings, while losses were again seen in Fortis Global Insurance, CAP, Veritas Kapital, Vitafoam and The Initiates.
