Nigerian table tennis players advance to international competitions
Nigerian table tennis players are making notable appearances on the international circuit. Veteran Aruna Quadri is set to face rising Chinese defender Li Tianyang in the qualification draw for the 2026 WTT China Smash. Quadri enters the match with a strong historical record against defensive players, having won 11 of his last 12 encounters against such opponents. However, Li Tianyang brings significant momentum following a semi-final run at the WTT Star Contender Astana.
In junior competition, Umar Ayoola and Elizabeth Emelike have been selected for the ITTF World Hopes Week & Challenge 2026. The event will be held from October 12 to 18 at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield, United Kingdom. The two players earned their spots following successful performances at the Africa Hopes Week and Challenge in Ghana. They will join 36 of the world’s top U-12 players for intensive training and competition aimed at identifying talent for the ITTF High Performance pathway.
