Nigerian Union of Journalists proposes salary structure bill
The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) is developing a bill to be presented to the National Assembly aimed at establishing a structured salary for journalists. NUJ National President Alhassan Yahya stated that the initiative seeks to promote media development, professional excellence, and improved welfare for media workers.
Yahya noted that journalists currently face poor remuneration despite their role in sustaining democracy. He appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene in the issue of journalist compensation, drawing a comparison to the approved salary increases for judicial workers.
In a separate activity marking the NUJ Voice of Nigeria (VON) Chapel Press Week in Abuja, officials emphasized the importance of physical fitness and ethical reporting. The event, themed “Truth in the Age of AI: Journalism, Democracy and 2027 General Election,” addressed the challenges of artificial intelligence and the need for responsible technology use to prevent misinformation ahead of future elections.
