Nigerian universities implement practical curricula to boost graduate employability
Higher education leaders in Nigeria are advocating for curriculum reforms to address graduate unemployment and bridge the gap between academia and industry.
Prof. Clement Kolawole, Vice-Chancellor of Trinity University, announced the introduction of a compulsory Skills Acquisition Academy. The initiative aims to develop entrepreneurial and marketable skills through partnerships with various institutions to ensure graduates are equipped for life beyond the classroom. The university also hosts an annual Campus Flaws event to provide career guidance and mentorship to prospective undergraduates.
Similarly, Prof. Tayo Arulogun, Vice-Chancellor of MIVA Open University, emphasized the necessity of shifting from theoretical teaching to practical, hands-on curricula. Arulogun stated that the goal is to transform students into job creators rather than job seekers. MIVA Open University has implemented a Career Advancement Centre and maintains industry partnerships, such as a relationship with Terra Industry, to facilitate practical training in fields like robotics and drone development.
