Nigerian universities promote ecosystem restoration and bio‑solutions

Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) in Zaria marked World Environment Day on July 21, 2026 with a symposium and tree‑planting exercise titled “Inspired by Nature: Restoring ABU’s Ecosystem for Resilience, Adaptation and Sustainable Microclimate.” Vice‑Chancellor Prof. Adamu Ahmed highlighted the university’s long‑standing commitment to environmental stewardship and urged collective responsibility from institutions, government and citizens. Speakers included Prof. Aminu Ladan Sharehu and Surveyor Maikano Samson, who stressed rapid urbanisation and its environmental challenges.

At Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) in Bauchi, Professor Ahmad Abdulhameed delivered the 48th inaugural lecture, “The Earth on Overdose: The Anthropocene and the Call for Ecological Restoration,” calling for biological solutions such as bio‑pesticides, bio‑fertilisers and bio‑stimulants to combat pollution and climate change. Vice‑Chancellor Prof. Ibrahim Garba reaffirmed the university’s commitment to sustaining the lecture series and promoting ecological awareness.
