Ondo State universities enter indefinite strike over unpaid subventions
Workers at several state-owned tertiary institutions in Ondo State, Nigeria, have commenced an indefinite strike. The industrial action involves the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).
The strike affects Adekunle Ajasin University (AAUA), Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH), and the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo (UNIMED). The Joint Action Committee (JAC) cited the Ondo State Government's failure to implement a promised 60 per cent increase in subventions and a Federal Government/Unions agreement as the primary cause.
In response to the strike, the management of Adekunle Ajasin University has directed all students to proceed on a two-week holiday and vacate campus hostels immediately. Meanwhile, students at AAUA have staged protests, barricading main gates and roads to demand a resolution to the 68-day disruption of academic activities.
