Nigerian Wrestling Federation begins mental toughness training for World Championships

The Nigerian Wrestling Federation (NWF) has initiated specialized training in sports and exercise physiology for its wrestlers as they prepare for the upcoming World Wrestling Championships. The championships are scheduled to take place in Astana, Kazakhstan, from October 24 to November 1.

During a visit to the national training camp in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, NWF Board member and sports psychologist Dr. Okou emphasized the importance of mental skills alongside physical conditioning. Dr. Okou identified four pillars of mental toughness: control, commitment, challenge, and confidence. He noted that while physical strength is standard at elite levels, mental composure and stress management are what differentiate medal winners.

In addition to individual psychological preparation, the training highlighted the necessity of team cohesion and behavioral regulation. Dr. Okou stressed that although wrestling is an individual sport on the mat, victory is a collective effort requiring strong support from coaches and teammates to increase an athlete's stress tolerance.
