Nigerian youth empowerment and political participation take center stage
In Ekiti State, Governor Biodun Oyebanji has urged young people to utilize government-led empowerment initiatives to build sustainable enterprises and acquire professional skills. Speaking at the International Youth Day Summit organized by the National Youth Council of Nigeria, the Governor emphasized that his administration has prioritized youth development through a dedicated Ministry and various interventions in entrepreneurship, digital innovation, agriculture, and sports.
Separately, the recent governorship election in Osun State has sparked discussions regarding the influence of the youth demographic on Nigeria’s upcoming 2027 general elections. Experts suggest that meaningful youth political participation depends on both good governance—such as the provision of infrastructure, security, and employment—and the cultivation of civic virtues, including voter registration and active monitoring of government accountability.
