Nigeria's 2027 Elections Face Incumbent Advantage and Opposition Turmoil

Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State is positioned as virtually unassailable in the 2027 governorship race. Since taking office in 2023, he has overseen extensive infrastructure projects, allocated a large share of the ₦758.7 billion 2026 budget to capital spending, and secured major health‑sector funding. Backed by party godfather Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, Aliyu’s performance and political network make his re‑election appear almost certain.

At the same time, Nigeria’s two main opposition formations, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), are encumbered by internal leadership battles, court rulings and registration disputes. The ADC faces factional splits over primaries and a Federal High Court move to deregister it, while the newly registered NDC contends with rapid expansion pains and friction with supporter groups. These challenges delay candidate finalisation and threaten the parties’ ability to mount a strong challenge to the ruling All Progressives Congress in the 2027 national elections.
