Nigeria's AFN President praises team performance in Budapest

Tonobok Okowa, President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), has praised the performance of the Nigerian contingent at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest, Hungary. Despite facing challenges such as visa issues prior to the competition, the young Nigerian team reached the finals in four out of the five events in which they competed.

Notable performances included former world record holder Tobi Amusan, who secured a silver medal in the women’s 100m hurdles, and Kanyinsola Ajayi, who finished fourth in the men’s 100m. Other finalists included Udodi Onwazuruike in the 200m and Nathaniel Ezekiel in the 400m hurdles.

Okowa stated that these results reinforce his confidence in the next generation of athletes. The AFN now intends to use this experience as a foundation to prepare for the 2027 World Athletics Championships in China.
