Nigeria's Alausa Announces ₦1 Trillion Education Funding to End Poverty Barrier
The Federal Government of Nigeria, led by Education Minister Dr Tunji Alausa, announced an investment exceeding ₦1 trillion in the tertiary education sector. The funding includes ₦250 billion for new student hostels, more than ₦150 billion for renovating existing hostels, lecture rooms and engineering workshops, over ₦130 billion to upgrade medical schools, ₦52 billion for modern equipment in 18 medical schools, and around ₦30 billion to build 11 advanced medical simulation laboratories. Alausa said the reforms mean financial hardship will no longer prevent qualified Nigerians from accessing universities, polytechnics and colleges of education. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration frames the initiative as part of a broader “Renewed Hope Agenda” to expand financial inclusion for youth. In parallel, government‑run loan schemes such as the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) have disbursed more than ₦184 billion to over 1.5 million students across 265 institutions by mid‑2026, providing interest‑free tuition support and monthly allowances.
These measures aim to remove economic barriers, increase enrolment, and strengthen the training of health professionals across the country.
