Nigeria's APC deepens internal rifts over defections and primary lawsuits

The All Progressives Congress (APC) intensified efforts to attract Senator Rufai Hanga, a prominent ally of former Kano governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, ahead of the 2027 general election. APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda met Hanga in Kano, describing the visit as a courtesy discussion on "unity, peace, stability and the future of Kano State." The meeting is seen as part of a campaign to pull Hanga away from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC); Hanga has not publicly announced any defection. Yilwatda said, "Nigeria’s progress is best served when we build bridges of understanding, encourage constructive dialogue, and place the welfare of citizens above partisan considerations."

Separately, APC aspirant Gyang Zi, who sought the Plateau North senatorial ticket, filed a suit in the Federal High Court in Jos after being disqualified from the party primary. The court granted an adjournment, scheduling further proceedings for 28 September 2026 to allow both sides to complete their pleadings. The case underscores ongoing disputes within the APC over candidate selection and internal governance.
