Nigeria CJN swears in 68 new Senior Advocates

Chief Justice of Nigeria Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun presided over the swearing-in of 68 legal practitioners as Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) during the 2026/2027 legal year ceremony in Abuja. The group includes 67 advocates and one academic, Professor Nnamdi Onyeka Obiaraeri.

During the ceremony, Justice Kekere-Ekun addressed several judicial priorities. She urged judges to maintain absolute impartiality and avoid political associations ahead of the 2027 general elections. She specifically cautioned lawyers against “forum shopping” and the institution of multiple proceedings for similar reliefs, noting such practices can undermine judicial processes and create conflicting orders.

Additionally, the Chief Justice emphasized the need for judicial mentorship, calling on senior judges to guide younger colleagues to ensure the transfer of institutional knowledge. She also advocated for the adoption of technology to improve case adjudication and warned against the use of social media to harass judicial officers or discredit court judgments.
