Nigeria's First Lady Oluremi Tinubu lauds judiciary at Abuja women judges conference

The International Association of Women Judges held its African Regional Conference in Abuja, themed “Promoting Excellence in the Administration of Justice.” First Lady Oluremi Tinubu addressed the opening ceremony, stating that the judiciary is central to sustaining the rule of law in a democratic society and praising the contribution of women judges in broadening perspectives and deepening justice.

Chief Justice Kudirat Kekere‑Ekun urged greater appointment of women to senior judicial roles, arguing that gender balance strengthens institutional legitimacy and public confidence. She emphasized that the judiciary, unlike the executive or legislature, derives its authority from impartiality and integrity, and called for efficiency, transparency, accountability and human‑centered decision‑making even as digital tools are adopted.

Attorney‑General Lateef Fagbemi, speaking through the Solicitor‑General, reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to judicial reforms that champion gender inclusivity and improve access to justice. Delegates from several African countries, including senior judges and legal officials, participated in discussions on enhancing judicial capacity and cooperation across the continent.
