Nigeria’s creative and digital economy seeing global growth, says WIPO

Dr. Oluwatobiloba Moody, Director of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Nigeria Office, has highlighted the global growth of Nigeria’s creative and digital economy. Speaking at a national seminar in Abuja organized by the Nigerian Copyright Commission, Moody noted that sectors such as Afrobeats and Nollywood are achieving significant international success.

However, Moody warned that digital transformation has evolved the nature of copyright infringement. He described modern piracy as a “sophisticated, borderless enterprise” that is increasingly linked to cybersecurity risks. He noted that illicit digital platforms do more than steal content; they can expose users to malware and disrupt digital infrastructure.

The seminar, titled “Protecting Nigeria’s Creative Economy and Digital Infrastructure Against Online Piracy,” aimed to unite stakeholders from law enforcement, telecommunications, and the creative industry to develop a national response action plan. Moody emphasized that combating piracy requires a combination of enforcement, capacity building, and technical assistance to foster a culture of respect for intellectual property.
