Nigeria officials reassure diaspora on security and economy

Nigerian government officials have engaged with the Nigerian diaspora community in Luanda, Angola, on the sidelines of the 21st Extraordinary Session of the African Union Assembly. During the meeting, Minister of Defence General Christopher Musa addressed security concerns, noting that regional instability in the Sahel has contributed to domestic threats. He assured citizens that the government is working to increase the manpower, equipment, and operational capacity of the Armed Forces while implementing comprehensive border management measures.

Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo provided an optimistic outlook on the national economy, stating that Nigeria is on a path toward full recovery. In response to community requests, he indicated he would investigate the possibility of establishing a Nigerian passport production centre in Angola to facilitate easier consular services.

Separately, the Defence Headquarters clarified that a planned drawdown of over 200 U.S. personnel from Nigeria will not signal a breakdown in bilateral security cooperation. Officials emphasized that the partnership remains strong, focusing on intelligence sharing, training, and technical assistance to combat terrorism.
