Nigeria's DSS Compensation Initiative Prompted by Lawyer Hamza Dantani
Human‑rights lawyer Hamza D. Dantani has called on all Nigerian security agencies to adopt a compensation scheme for victims of wrongful arrest, detention and operational errors, citing the Department of State Services (DSS) as a model. He praised DSS Director‑General Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi for compensating individuals such as farmer Nura Idris (₦3 million), businesswoman Chineze Ozoadibe (₦10 million) and a Sokoto trader (₦20 million) after mistaken arrests or injuries.
Dantani argued that compensation demonstrates accountability, upholds constitutional and moral duties, and strengthens public confidence without compromising security operations. He urged the police, army, NSCDC, EFCC and NDLEA to implement similar mechanisms to redress innocent citizens whose rights have been violated.
