Nigeria's former Kaduna governor Nasir El‑Rufai detention sparks US lobbying campaign
Former Kaduna State governor Nasir El‑Rufai has been detained by Nigeria’s Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) since February on allegations of abuse of office, fraud and financial misconduct during his 2015‑2023 tenure. The ICPC arraigned him on an amended nine‑count charge and has delayed bail hearings, imposing conditions that require an emir and a senior government official to act as sureties. Former Emir of Kano Sanusi Lamido Sanusi criticised the bail requirements as unusually stringent and warned of a broader erosion of cultural and political influence in northern Nigeria.
El‑Rufai’s supporters, through the El‑Rufai Support Group Association, have hired Washington‑based advocacy firm Vanguard Africa to lobby U.S. officials, members of Congress, pro‑democracy organisations and multilateral bodies, asserting that his prosecution reflects a deeper crisis threatening Nigeria’s democratic institutions. The group’s statement quotes Vanguard Africa’s planned outreach: “Vanguard Africa will plan and execute outreach to U.S. administration officials, Congress, relevant bureaus and agencies, pro‑democracy institutions, and multilateral stakeholders on behalf of ERSGA.”
The ICPC defended its actions, stating it operates within the law and is not politically motivated, saying, “We operate within the confines of the law and will continue to carry out our functions within the confines of the law.”
