Nigeria's FCCPC enforces consumer protection and market competition

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) is actively executing its dual mandate to regulate the Nigerian market and protect consumer rights under the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) of 2018. The Commission, which evolved from the former Consumers Protection Council, serves as both a competition authority and a consumer protection agency.

Key statutory rights established under the FCCPA include price transparency and product safety. Suppliers are legally required to display full prices in Nigerian Naira, prohibiting hidden fees or mandatory private price inquiries. Additionally, Section 131 guarantees that products must meet safety standards, holding manufacturers and retailers liable for damages caused by substandard goods. The FCCPC manages consumer grievances through an online portal and physical offices, receiving hundreds of complaints daily.
