Nigeria's FCCPC faces contempt court over digital lending regulations

The Federal High Court in Lagos began committal proceedings against the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) for allegedly breaching an interim injunction that restrains enforcement of its Digital, Electronic, Online or Non‑Traditional Consumer Lending Regulations 2025. Judge Ambrose‑Lewis Allagoa adjourned the case to 22 May after hearing arguments from the Wireless Application Service Providers Association of Nigeria (WASPAN), which contends the FCCPC exceeded its statutory powers, and the FCCPC, which argues jurisdictional issues remain unresolved. The court had previously ordered the FCCPC not to implement key provisions of the regulations, which aim to curb predatory digital credit practices.

In a separate regulatory action, the FCCPC announced that Mikano International Limited has fully complied with a December 2025 order, clearing the company of all financial liabilities. The clearance underscores the commission’s broader enforcement activities in the Nigerian market.
