Nigeria's Federal Court Re-arraigns Ansaru Terrorists Over Oyo School Kidnap

The Federal Government of Nigeria has re‑arraigned two senior commanders of the proscribed Ansaru terrorist group and three alleged accomplices before the Federal High Court in Abuja. The defendants – Abubakar Abba Mahmuda (also known as Abu Bara’a), his deputy Abubakar Abbas (Mallam Mahmuda Al‑Nigeri), Abdulrazak Umar, Yunusa Musa and Shamsu Adamu Sani – were previously sentenced to life imprisonment for their roles in the May 15, 2026 attack on a school in Oriire Local Government Area, Oyo State, where 46 people were abducted and two teachers were killed.

Justice Salim Ibrahim read a fresh six‑count charge covering terrorism, kidnapping and murder. All five defendants pleaded not guilty to the new charge, and the court adjourned the matter to September 25 for the commencement of trial. The case underscores Nigeria’s ongoing legal response to the Ansaru insurgency and the tragedy that affected hundreds of students and teachers in Oyo State.
