Nigeria's Federal Ministry clears Enugu-Onitsha Expressway of parked trucks

The Federal Government of Nigeria has started an operation to evacuate heavy‑duty trucks that were parked indiscriminately along the Enugu‑Onitsha Expressway, from the Anambra border through the 9th Mile axis to Enugu metropolis. The effort is coordinated by the Federal Ministry of Works together with the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Enugu State Transport Management Authority, the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigerian Army. Federal Controller of Works Smart Okpi said the action follows the Minister of Works’ directive to remove illegal parking and improve road safety. Community leaders and business associations, including the Gariki Ugwuoba Cattle Market, were mobilised to report violations, resulting in high compliance and trucks being cleared from the highway.

Okpi noted that impounded vehicles will be taken to the FRSC yard, but limited space for storage could become a challenge if the operation expands. He advised operators to use a nearby private trailer park and temporary government‑provided space until dedicated trailer parks are built. Market Chairman Mohamed Idris praised the exercise as timely and beneficial, highlighting local sensitisation efforts to keep the road clear.
