Nigeria's Federal Road Safety Corps Pushes Bill to Ban Preaching on Buses

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has drafted legislation to prohibit preaching and hawking inside commercial vehicles, arguing that such activities distract drivers and threaten public peace. Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) welcomed the proposal, with Executive Director Professor Ishaq Akintola stating that the bill would improve road safety and curb uncivilised behaviour on buses.

Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) lawyer Goodnews C. Nnadozie warned that a blanket ban could breach constitutional guarantees of religious freedom and expression. She urged regulators to consider targeted measures on noise and obstruction rather than an outright prohibition, citing potential discrimination against evangelical practices. As of now, the bill remains under debate in the National Assembly and has not been signed into law.
