Nigeria's Federal Road Safety Corps urges helmets and expands safety initiatives
On World Bicycle Day (June 3), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Jigawa State called on cyclists and other road users to wear helmets, improve visibility and respect traffic rules. The sector commander highlighted the health and environmental benefits of cycling and announced activities such as a public awareness rally, safety lectures and distribution of reflective stickers.
The FRSC is also undergoing a major institutional transformation under Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed. During the recent Eid El‑Kabir period, more than 30,000 regular and special marshals were deployed nationwide on major corridors, using patrol vehicles, ambulances, radar guns, breathalyzers and mobile courts to enforce traffic laws and respond to emergencies. The agency is rolling out digital tools such as crash‑data management systems and biometric driver licensing, and has conducted leadership training for senior officers to strengthen professional and ethical standards.
