Nigeria advances digital and energy infrastructure through new connectivity and investment initiatives
Nigeria is undertaking several major initiatives to modernize its digital and energy infrastructure. The Federal Government will begin deploying a 90,000-kilometre fibre-optic network in October to expand broadband capacity and support the digital economy, particularly for startups and fintech companies.
In the energy sector, the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) is launching the Renewable Asset Management Company (RAMCO) to attract private capital for renewable energy projects. The REA aims to transform electricity shortages into investment opportunities by linking power infrastructure with digital and industrial needs, noting the rising energy demands of artificial intelligence and data centers.
Additionally, the National Population Commission has established 4,011 registration centers to facilitate nationwide digital birth and death registration. On October 1, 2026, the country will also transition to a National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System, providing unique machine-readable codes for individual buildings to improve e-commerce, banking, and emergency services.
