Nigeria's fintech sector advances with micro‑payment innovation and compliance focus
Touch and Pay Technologies (TAP) has emerged as a leading African micro‑transaction payment provider, handling millions of low‑value payments for public transport, government collections and everyday commerce in Nigeria. By building its own payment protocol, TAP can profitably process transactions as small as N60, a challenge for global payment networks. The company’s founders Olamide Afolabi, Kabir Yabo and Michael Oluwole pursued a solution tailored to local market frictions, earning backing from Y Combinator and praise from investor Ndubuisi Ekekwe, who wrote, “I first met them in a modest office on Adeola Odeku Street in Victoria Island, Lagos. They had a small piece of technology, but I was completely sold on the vision.”
At the same time, Nigerian fintechs are reshaping compliance into a strategic advantage. Industry leaders argue that integrating Know‑Your‑Customer (KYC) and Anti‑Money‑Laundering (AML) processes into the product experience builds trust, improves relationships with banks and regulators, and differentiates platforms in a crowded market. By treating compliance as part of the user journey rather than a legal checklist, firms aim to enhance security, reduce fraud and foster long‑term growth.
