Nigeria's Football Federation Under Pressure After World Cup Miss

Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after losing a penalty shoot‑out to the Democratic Republic of Congo, extending the Super Eagles' absence since the 2018 tournament in Russia. Unlike Italy, Saudi Arabia, Libya and other federations that saw resignations or sackings after similar failures, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has retained its leadership despite the setback.

Former captain William Troost‑Ekong described the miss as a “major disappointment” and urged the NFF to treat the loss as a catalyst for comprehensive reforms ahead of the 2030 World Cup. He praised the squad’s talent and motivation but called for a sustainable plan to restore Nigeria to the world stage.

Analysts highlighted the economic blow: FIFA distributes about US$440 million in prize money, with group‑stage participants receiving roughly US$9 million each. The missed qualification deprives Nigeria of guaranteed participation income, sponsorship deals and commercial benefits for broadcasters, advertisers, hotels, bars and other sectors that profit from World Cup exposure.
