Nigeria's foreign exchange inflows hit record $109.9bn as digital payment trust slides

The Central Bank of Nigeria reported that foreign‑exchange inflows rose 13.8% in 2025, reaching a record $109.86 billion, largely from non‑oil exports, capital imports and over‑the‑counter purchases. Aggregate outflows also rose, but net inflow grew to $60.81 billion, up from $58.16 billion the previous year.

A separate policy report on Nigeria’s digital financial ecosystem found public confidence slipping, assigning a trust‑resilience score of 5.4 out of 10. The study highlighted frequent transaction failures, weak dispute‑resolution mechanisms and unreliable service as the main threats, noting that “service reliability and dispute resolution are the primary drivers of confidence erosion, far outweighing concerns about fraud, data privacy, and artificial intelligence.” It warned that the sector must now focus on building the confidence that will encourage people to move away from cash.
