Nigeria's FRSC bans officers from escorting politicians
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has prohibited its personnel from providing escorts for politicians during campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections. ACM Abimbola Owolabi, the Zonal Commanding Officer for RS6, issued the directive during a visit to the Cross River State Command in Calabar.
Under the new directive, patrol vehicles and sirens are strictly forbidden from being used for political activities or private engagements, such as weddings and funeral processions. Officers deployed to campaign venues are instructed to focus exclusively on traffic management to prevent congestion and road crashes, rather than leading political convoys.
Owolabi also cautioned personnel against corruption, extortion, and other forms of unprofessional conduct that could undermine public confidence in the corps. She urged officers to prioritize professionalism, safety during enforcement operations, and intensified public education to help achieve the goal of zero road fatalities.
