Nigeria's Adeniyi Adeyemi faces House probe over fake Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) submitted an interim report to President Bola Tinubu confirming that the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC) never had legal backing and that its alleged Director‑General, Adeniyi Adeyemi, was not appointed by the federal government. The report found forged appointment letters, illegal occupation of office space in the Federal Secretariat and a budget allocation of about ₦1.3 billion for a non‑existent agency.

The House of Representatives set up an ad‑hoc committee to investigate the scandal. Adeyemi, who is currently in police custody, has refused to be questioned behind closed doors and, through his lawyer Ademola Oyedokun, demanded a public hearing, invoking Section 89 of the Constitution. The committee, citing a court order, plans a private interrogation, while the Inspector‑General of Police has declined to produce Adeyemi without a specific warrant. A businessman testified that he paid N400 million for a contract promised by Adeyemi, highlighting the agency’s appearance of legitimacy.

The controversy has sparked public outrage over administrative failures and possible corruption within Nigeria’s government structures.
